I disagree. Cantonese is a form of Chinese, and it is very different from English. Sure, there are some certain Cantonese words such as 「巴士」、「的士」、「熱狗」are loan words from English, but they are ultimately very different languages.
Also, even if English is indeed your second language, if you like the language then speaking fluently with accurate grammar isn't such a hard thing after all.

speaking well is different from writing with grammar
just my humble opinion,
when you talk to people along with your face and/or body expression, so people understand or guess your "meaning" easily.
but if writing an essay without correct grammar, it is a disaster.

accent is not a big problem in US I think coz they do understand it as native speakers.
but you shall try to speak faster, just practise. language always needs practice.
I'm from Hong Kong too. Listening is my worst part still...:'(
