The word anime (動漫) has two meanings. One is the combination of animation and comics, and the other is a synonym for animation. The second definition is mainly popular in mainland China, and some people regard it as a wrong usage.

Combining animation (動畫) and comics (漫畫) into one unit (動畫+漫畫=>動漫) is a concept developed by fans in the Chinese region of Asia. There are also words such as "ACG" that adds video games or "ACGN" that adds novels.
